TheSmidt Heart Institute is home to a distinguished team of experts who are setting the bar for cardiovascular care in the United States.

The Institute unites 16 centers and programs to diagnose and treat the full spectrum of heart and vascular conditions for all patients, from infants to those with advanced disease. Compassionate care is integrated with an agile research enterprise, giving patients access to pioneering treatments.

The Quality Improvement Registered Nurse (QI RN) in the Cardiovascular Intervention Center (CVIC) is responsible for a comprehensive review of 100% of patient records for those who undergo procedures in the Cath/EP Lab. The role involves abstracting statistics and clinical data for both internal and external uses.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Data Review and Abstraction:
    • Conduct thorough reviews of patient records in the CVIC.
    • Abstract and compile statistics and clinical data for internal databases and external registries.
  2. Internal Data Management:
    • Utilize internal databases for generating volume/statistical reports and physician statistics.
    • Support privileging, recredentialing, and performance improvement committee reporting.
    • Contribute to Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) reviews.
  3. External Data Submission:
    • Ensure compliance with Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services by submitting data to national and state registries.
    • Facilitate insurance contracting and comply with OPSHD State of CA reporting requirements.
    • Provide data for U.S. News and World Report.
  4. Registry Management:
    • Enter abstracted data into various registries, including the American College of Cardiology (ACC) NCDR data registries, the Society of Thoracic Surgery (STS) registries, and the California Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) Outcomes Reporting Program (CCORP).
  5. Collaboration and Presentation:
    • Collaborate with the Document Management Specialist Supervisor and Heart Institute Managers.
    • Collect and prepare data for public reporting.
    • Present findings and data analyses in various settings.
  6. Performance Improvement:
    • Actively participate in efforts to improve clinical outcomes and patient care quality within the CVIC.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program required
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred

License/Certification:

  • Current California RN License
  • Certified Professional in Health Quality (CPHQ) preferred. 

Experience:

  • Two (2) years of nursing experience in an acute care setting.
  • Experience in clinical data management, healthcare quality compliance, registry management, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, ideally within a cardiovascular setting.
  • Cardiac ICU experience.
