From Clinical Trials to Executive Leadership
Billy Gellepis’ 16-Year Journey at Cedars-Sinai
When Billy Gellepis walked through the doors of Cedars-Sinai in 2009, he had just graduated college and wasn’t entirely sure where his future in healthcare would lead. What he did know was that he wanted to make an impact. Sixteen years later, Billy is the Executive Director of Clinical and Research Operations in the Department of Medicine, and his story is a testament to what’s possible when curiosity meets opportunity.
Starting Out: A Leap into the Unknown
Billy’s first role was as a clinical trial coordinator in the Pituitary Center. “I had an interest in healthcare, but not sure exactly which area I wanted to pursue,” he recalls. That first position opened the door to a world of research—learning how to conduct clinical trials, negotiate grants and contracts, and eventually oversee research staff. It was the beginning of a career defined by growth and adaptability.
Climbing the Ladder
Over the years, Billy moved through roles that challenged him and expanded his skill set:
- Research Associate I
- Research Operations Associate
- Manager and Associate Director of Research Operations.
And now, Executive Director in Cedars-Sinai’s largest department—a role he describes as both demanding and deeply rewarding. “Management requires a lot of people-work, which can be challenging, but also the best part of the job,” Billy says. “I’ve been able to use some of those people-management skills in my personal life as well.”
What Makes Cedars-Sinai Different
For Billy, the most important aspect of working at Cedars-Sinai is the ability to continually learn. “Each day brings something new. It’s anything but boring, which is important for longevity and sustainability,” he explains. That dynamic environment, paired with mentorship and professional development opportunities, has shaped his career in ways he never imagined. From shadowing leaders to learning from faculty experts, Billy has had access to resources that helped him grow into the leader he is today.

Billy’s message to anyone considering a career at Cedars-Sinai is simple: “There’s a place for everyone, no matter their future plans. Whether you want to stay long-term or use this experience as a stepping stone, you’ll find opportunities to learn and grow.” He points to Cedars-Sinai’s culture of continual learning and leadership development as key to its success—and to his own.
